According to the age, abilities, habits and needs of clients, speech therapists use different assessment tools and methods to assess individual\u2019s eating methods, postures, oral motor abilities, swallowing abilities and so on. \u00a0Individualized treatment plans will be developed according to the assessment results. \u00a0During therapy, continuous assessment will be performed, and therapy goals will be modified accordingly.<\/p>\n

\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\tAssessment and training<\/span>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/h3>

  • Dysphagia \/ Swallowing difficulties can be caused by strokes, cognitive disorders (e.g. Dementia, Parkinson\u2019s Diseases), aging and nasopharyngeal cancer etc.<\/li>\n
  • Symptoms of swallowing disorders include frequent chokes, weight loss, dehydration, depressions, and aspiration pneumonia, etc<\/li>\n
  • Our speech therapists conduct detailed assessments with patients. \u00a0Assessments may include:\n
      \n
    • Bedside assessment<\/li>\n
    • Videofluroscopic Swallowing Study (VFSS)<\/li>\n
    • Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing(FEES)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Depending on the needs and abilities of an individual, our speech therapists use different approaches or methods to improve his\/her swallowing ability, e.g.<\/p>\n

        \n
      • Diet Modification \u2013 based on IDDSI (The International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative), we suggest appropriate liquid viscosity and food textures<\/li>\n
      • Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) \u2013 we use electrical stimulation to stimulate and strengthen swallowing reflexes, and relevant muscles involved in swallowing<\/li>\n
      • Deep Pharyngeal Neuromuscular Stimulation (DPNS) \u2013 we stimulate different areas in oral cavity and pharynx to improve swallowing reflexes<\/li>\n
      • Manual Therapy \u2013 we use specific massage method to relax neck and shoulder muscles<\/li>\n
      • Caretaker Training \u2013 we train the caretakers of patients with swallowing disorders so that they can prepare appropriate meals, help patients to eat with suitable postures, and help patients to perform swallowing exercises<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>
